Meets ISO 22241 specifications

Super S DEF Meets Applicable Standards, Specifications and Performance Requirements for use in all SCR Emission Control Systems

Why Do We Need DEF?

In order to meet the EPA 2010 mandate that oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emitted from Class 6, 7 and 8 diesel truck engines be reduced to almost zero levels by 2010, most manufacturers have chosen to use SCR, Selective Catalytic Reduction, technology.

How Does It Work?

SCR Emission Control Systems consist of a catalyst, a reducing agent (DEF) and a dosing system which injects a mist of DEF into the
exhaust downstream of the engine and diesel particulate filter. The DEF mist vaporizes in the heat of the exhaust forming ammonia and carbon dioxide which then reacts with the catalyst and NOx emissions, converting NOx to nitrogen and water, which are harmless.

How Much Will I Use? What Happens If I Run Out? What If It Freezes? What about Storage?

SCR systems are designed to use approximately 2 gallons of DEF for every 100 gallons of fuel, with a range among most engine manufacturers reported to be around 1 to 3 gallons DEF/100 gal fuel. Actual usage may run higher as consumption will vary with engine performance and driving conditions. SCR equipped trucks are expected to provide increased engine efficiency/ fuel economy, providing a reduction in operating costs, even when factoring in the additional cost of DEF. If you run out of DEF, engine power will be substantially reduced until you add DEF. DEF freezes below 12°F, but freezing will not harm DEF. It can be used again, once it thaws. DEF tanks will be equipped with heaters to keep DEF liquid in cold temperatures.

DEF should be stored at temperatures between 10 and 86°F. Above 86°F, shelf life (in a non-vented container) may degrade to less than a year. DEF is corrosive, such as to aluminum, copper, brass and zinc, and should be stored in approved containers such as HDPE plastic or stainless steel. DEF and all surfaces with which it comes into contact must be completely clean or it will compromise the DEF’s purity and harm or degrade the SCR system.

Q: What is DEF?
A: DEF stands for Diesel Exhaust Fluid, a highly pure liquid that is used to replenish pre-exhaust systems on most 2010 model year and beyond trucks.  DEF is the reactant necessary for the functionality of the SCR system. It is a carefully blended aqueous urea solution of 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% deionized water.

Q: Where can I get DEF?
A: Several Petroleum distributors offer DEF either in gallon jugs or totes. Salathe Oil Company offers DEF in jugs and totes.

Q: How much DEF do I need?
A: Several factors such as size of fleet, average miles traveled, type of trucks, etc. factor into the equation of how much DEF you’ll need. DEF consumption is expected to be approximately 2% of fuel consumption, depending on vehicle operation, duty cycle, geography, load ratings, etc.

Q. How can an operator determine how much DEF they will need/use?
 A. DEF consumption will be approximately 2% of the diesel fuel consumed. Another way to consider it is that DEF will be consumed on a 50 to 1 ratio with diesel. (For every 50 gallons of diesel fuel burned, you will use 1 gallon of DEF). If you know the average fuel consumption of a vehicle, you can easily calculate the amount of DEF that will be used.

Annual miles for average truck = 50,000 miles
MPG for average truck = 8 mpg
50,000 miles / 8 mpg = 6,250 gallons diesel fuel per year
DEF usage @ 2% of fuel consumption = 125 gallons of DEF / year
125 gallons / 10 gallon tank (average size) = 13 DEF fill-ups / year

Q: Are there certain handling procedures I need to follow for DEF?
A: Yes. DEF will turn to an icy slurry if it gets too cold and if exposed to extreme heat for too long, it may drop out of solution. Consult your vendor for safe handling details.

Q: Is DEF an additive to diesel fuel?
A: No. DEF does not get mixed in with diesel fuel. It is used in the pre-exhaust system.
